Immigrants & Refugees

Mental Health & Wellness

AIFS provides culturally based mental health services to help African immigrants and refugees overcome stigma, access care, and build resilience. Our approach blends professional expertise with deep cultural understanding to make mental health support safe, respectful, and effective.

Why Mental Health Matters

Language barriers, cultural taboos, discrimination, trauma, and social isolation often keep immigrants and refugees from seeking help — even when they need it most.
AIFS works to change this by offering culturally responsive counseling, raising awareness, training community members, and connecting families to trusted mental health resources and providers.

African Community Mental Health First Aid (AC-MHFA)

African Community Mental Health First Aid (AC-MHFA) equips individuals with the skills to recognize signs of mental distress, offer initial support, and connect someone to professional care.

What we provide:

Social Counseling & Support

Our culturally based social counseling helps families and individuals navigate personal, family, and social challenges while adapting to a new environment.

Community Wellness Groups

Safe, welcoming spaces — including Fatherhood and Motherhood groups — where immigrants and refugees share experiences, build coping strategies, and receive peer support.
These circles integrate culturally grounded mental health discussions, parenting guidance, and stress management tools to help families thrive.
