Refugee and Immigrant Health

Refugee and Immigrant Health Program

The AIFS Refugee and Immigrant Health Program tackles health, home safety, and mental health challenges faced by African immigrants and refugees in Nebraska through a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Strategic Plan.

Healthcare Literacy

We help African immigrants and refugees understand and navigate the U.S. healthcare system.
Through culturally and linguistically tailored workshops, often offered in French and other African languages, families learn about preventive care, how to use health insurance, and how to communicate effectively with doctors. Our goal is to empower families to make informed decisions and confidently access the care they need.

Community Health Access & Navigation

Our trained Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Health Navigators guide families through every step of the healthcare journey. They help schedule appointments, connect with interpreters, find affordable clinics, and follow up after visits. By building trust and removing language or system barriers, we ensure newcomers receive timely, high-quality care.

Nutrition & Chronic Disease Prevention

We promote healthy lifestyles while respecting cultural food traditions.
Families learn about balanced eating, portion control, and ways to prepare African dishes with healthier methods. We also offer screenings and coaching to reduce the risk of diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic conditions, helping families stay active and thrive.

Oral Health

AIFS partners with local dental professionals to make oral health more accessible. We provide free or low-cost screenings, fluoride treatments, and education on proper brushing, flossing, and cavity prevention. Parents learn how to care for their children’s teeth early, reducing long-term dental issues.

Car Seat Safety Program

Our Car Seat Safety Program helps parents keep children safe on the road.
Certified technicians provide free car seat checks, hands-on installation support, and education on proper child passenger safety. Families learn how to choose the right seat, install it correctly, and adjust it as their child grows, reducing the risk of injury in a crash.

Promotion of Mother’s Care (ProMoCare)

Our Child & Maternal Health care program, Promotion of Mother’s Care (ProMoCare), supports expectant mothers and families with young children through the culturally sensitive Promotion of Mother’s Care program.
Services include prenatal and postnatal home visits, breastfeeding education, car seat safety checks, and essential baby supplies. We help parents prepare for a healthy birth, nurture their infants, and feel confident as they build a safe, thriving home.
